Story and Photos by Peter Carlson; Capital Crew Alumni 2005
Here is his story:
For starters it was a rollercoaster.
I switched into the boat about a week before we left and switched from starboard to port only a few days before that. Than about four-five days before we left the other port in the boat was dismissed and the spare port (Ricky Bargreen- a walk on this season) took his spot. So with a new line up we left a few days later. The heat was a little shaky, which made for a difficult race but we were able to pull it out and win so we could advance straight to the final. During our warm up the skies opened up and dumped about two inches of water in the boat. That was nice cause we knew no one was as prepared to race in the rain than us, coming from Seattle. Beyond that it was just business line up, start, go. We were down a little off the start but as soon as we got into our base pace we just started walking on the field and finished a length ahead of Cal and a couple open on the rest of the field. It was really good rowing the whole race just that kind of effortless speed you get when a boat clicks.
Dustin Krause '07 also a Capital alumni was sitting 2 seat, he was really influential in getting the boat to gel together. -There is a good video of the race on www.goldmedalfilms.com, you may need to open it in safari or
firefox, cause it doesn't work in explorer.
Sincerely,
Peter Carlson
