ATTENTION FRESHMAN ROWERS...
Any rower that is a freshman and plans to race in the freshman category during the Southwest Junior
Rowing Championships (May 5-6) will need to show proof of their high school freshman status. If your
athlete plans to race in the freshman category, please make sure that they are in possession of their
high school ID card.  If your athlete has lost their ID card, please remind them to get a replacement
prior to the regatta in order for them to compete in this category.

IMG_0191Thank you Gold River Bel-Air!

Capital Crew Booster Club and Rowers want to thank
Gold River Bel-Air for their support with food which is
served to the athletes during the spring regattas.

Thanks also to our Rower Food Chef, Marlowe, and
her very dedicated volunteers for preparing both
breakfast and lunch for all of our athletes!

BOOSTER CLUB SPRING MEMBERSHIP - It's never too late to join!

The Capital Crew Booster Club relies on parents' participation to keep our athletes competitive,
so if you haven't joined the Booster Club yet, please join NOW to support our team.
The Booster Club fee is $165.00 for each semester.
We rely on everyone's participation to cover the cost of the food that is prepared by our parent
volunteers and available for every athlete at every race.  These dues also help subsidize
the cost of travel to the away races.  We don't have a fundraiser this semester, so we really
count on everyone's participation to support our athletes!

What is the Capital Crew junior rowing program?

Capital Crew Fall 2012

Capital Crew is a very successful, non-profit, competitive junior rowing program. It has been in existence since 1989 and is based at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.

Membership in Capital Crew is open to all high school students (9th thru 12th grade). All first year athletes are placed on the mens or womens novice squads. After completing one year at Capital Crew, the athlete is then placed on the mens or womens varsity squads.

Each year, many of our graduating seniors go on to colleges and universities to row competitively. Many of our athletes are awarded athletic scholarships to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. Mary Whipple, an alumni of Capital Crew, coxsed the Women’s 8+ and won tthe Silver medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Visit our Home ... the Sacramento State Aquatic Center

The Sacramento State Aquatic Center, located on beautiful Lake Natoma, is home to one of the best rowing venues in the country. The Aquatic Center is host to several regional championship regattas, such as the Southwest Junior Regional Championships and the Pac-10 Championships. The Sac State Aquatic Center has also been fortunate in hosting the IRA Championships, as well as the NCAA Women’s Championships.sac-state-aquatic-center

Capital Crew has the advantage of training on the same course that is used for qualifying races for the Youth Nationals. This “home field advantage” gives Capital a big competitive edge over other junior programs. In addition, the Aquatic Center facilities, meeting areas, weight room, artificial turf workout fields, and four bay boathouses are state of the art, making the Aquatic Center one of the finest rowing facilities on the West Coast!

Why Do We Row?

Crew is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Rowing is often described as the "ultimate team sport" because it requires groups of athletes to work in perfect unison to move the boat in the most efficient and quick manner. No other sport demands more teamwork.

why-row-eriks-boatAnyone can participate as part of a crew. Athletes come in all sizes. There are many different weight classifications for men and women. One of the toughest positions in a boat is the coxswain. A coxswain who is usually small and light is responsible for steering the boat, setting the pace of the rowers and executing the coaches plan..

Rowing is a highly competitive sport. Athletes exercise and develop the muscles in their legs, arms, back and stomach. Rowing teaches discipline and permits an individual to develop his or her strength, endurance, technique and character.

When it is done well, rowing looks graceful, elegant and sometimes effortless. Do not be fooled, however, because rowers have been referred to as the world's most physically-fit athletes.

A 2,000-meter race demands virtually everything a human being can physically and mentally bring to the competition. Aerobic ability, technical talent, mental discipline, balance and the ability to continue to work when the body is demanding that you stop are all attributes of a rower.
